ABOUT US AND OUR COMMUNITY
We are two families, the Whites and the Kennedys.
David Kennedy and his wife, Hannah, both grew up in Atlanta, as did my wife Brittany. I (John White) grew up in Nashville, TN. David and I met at Vanderbilt in the early 90's and have been close friends ever since. We both left careers in Atlanta to relocate to the mountains of Boone, NC in the early 2000's. We have raised our families here.
The Kennedy's have 11 living children. They lost their 11 year old son, John, in a 4-wheeler accident in Sep, 2021. Now, in March 2025, their oldest is 26 and married and their youngest just turned 1. The White family has 7 children, our oldest is 26 and our youngest is 15.
We have homeschooled from the beginning. We are probably more Charlotte Mason oriented than anything else. Teach the 3 R's and put lots of good books on the shelf for young minds to gobble up. We have not done much formal co-op. For the last 8 years, I (John) have done a class for the older children of 3-4 families covering history, theology, law, politics and a little business. Lately, that weekly meeting has turned to psalm singing as well. In short, we are doing life together.
Our daughters are unapologetically preparing for a life centered "in the home" that will likely involve marriage if "we live and the Lord wills". And our sons are being discipled into business ownership. Our homes are busy places and we love to entertain friends from church and our community.
David and I are business partners. Our primary business is a vacation rental management company called Carolina Cabin Rentals.
There is a warm and fairly diverse Christian community in our county of 50,000 and within it a close homeschool community. There are many, many friendships here across churches. Our families hosted a lectures series and psalm sing one summer recently and about 15 churches were represented.
